Bill Rodgers earned his wings

In WW2 the Royal Canadian Air Force

enlisted 232,000 men and 17,000 women and operated 86 squadrons, including 47 overseas.


By 1945, the R.C.A.F. had grown to be

the world's fourth-largest air force.

Canada's primary role was to supply food, raw materials,

and to run the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan,

the largest training program in history turning out 131,553 graduates.

Bill was flying off  Hitler's Atlantic Wall when he had to ditch up onto a beach in Portugal.

Since Portugal was neutral all combatants were detained in what Bill described as a precursor to the Club Med concepts.

During WW2 if you captured and then escaped or were released it was deemed that you were to switch to another theatre of war.

So Bill headed to Burma.

During World War Two,  Loren Greene served as a Flying officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was assigned as the principal newsreader on the CBC National News. The CBC gave him the nickname "The Voice of Canada", but his role in delivering distressing war news with his deep, resonant voice caused many listeners to call him "The Voice of Doom", instead, particularly since he was delegated the assignment of reading the dreaded list of soldiers killed in the war.

Highlanders of Canada.

 

During the Second World War,

he attained the rank of Major,

and was awarded,  

The Distinguished Service Order

for gallantry and Distinguished

Conduct during

The Battle At Calcar, Germany

February 25/26, 1945.
